Today Republicans brought to the House floor, H.R.1, the Continuing Resolution that will fund the federal government for the remainder of fiscal year 2011. H.R. 1 proposes $100 billion in cuts to the President's fiscal year 2011 requests. This legislation includes the largest reduction in non-security, discretionary spending in the history of our nation -- over five times larger than any other discretionary cut package ever considered by the House.

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Kevin Yoder worked alongside committee members to take this positive step toward getting our economy back on track.

"Our economy has become saddled with burdensome deficits and unsustainable debt," said Congressman Kevin Yoder. "We need to cut spending and get our fiscal house in order if we want a thriving economy where businesses can flourish and jobs are created. If we want to return to prosperity, we have to get serious about reining in spending and avoiding devastating tax increases.

"Making real reductions to a government that has grown used to limitless increases is not easy. While I recognize the fact that there will be valuable programs affected by these reductions, the hard truth is that we simply can't afford to spend money we don't have. The Appropriations Committee went line by line to make fair, responsible and judicious reductions. These are hard decisions, but we need to take these tough actions in order to protect the future of our country."

Congressman Kevin Yoder is serving his first term and represents Kansas' 3rd Congressional District. Yoder is one of only three freshmen Representatives chosen to serve on the Appropriations Committee for the 112th Congress. Yoder has been selected to serve on the Commerce, Justice, Science Subcommittee, the Financial Services Subcommittee and the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee.
